I will have to believe in magic now.

The spirit is still there. Just needs an opportunity to burst into flower

☺ Yes the magic is there. I just have to be open to it. Thank you, David. I think you must bring out the magic in me through your continual support.x

Nice to see you are still writing poetry, Mandy.

Your “Walking Meditation” is rhythmically similar to Emily Dickinson.  Have a go at reading some of  her work – it is online – to see what I mean.

    All the best

    Thank you, Clarity.

And thank you, Janice. My poetry has been compared to Emily Dickinson before … which at the time made me feel pretty good about myself! ????

    David.

I had to laugh again at my comment, “I wish a poem would magically appear … and lo and behold a poem did appear! I need to make wishes more often. How are you?

    Hi Mandy

Good to hear you are still in the land of the living. Looks like it is nearly a year since you last posted a poem. Another must be due soon.

I am fine –waiting to proofread your next novel.

    Unhinged

    We stagger along black sands
    Like giggling school girls.
Clad in night gowns. Feet bared.
    Weighed down by fatigue, yet
    Light as champagne flutes;
    Our fears released!

The sea sweeps in from our left.
To the right; a Morepork laments
    It’s name; Calling. Us. Home.
    Wild Women. Un-tethered.
    Unleashed. Quite, Quite, Unhinged.
Returned to our selves. At last.

    Return to Piha

I stop the car to view, Piha,
    spread gloriously before me;

    Take a deep breath;
    such excitement in my heart.

    Fear dares to derail me
    for a moment;
    when I remember why
    I am here,

But I soothe it with words
    of quiet certainty.
It will be all right. Let’s play.

    Does everyone pause
    before entering the kingdom
    of Piha?

    Where sea and sky kiss
    the horizon.
    Where oceans of black sand
    sparkles with gems,

    And the teasing waves dance
at the paws of Lion Rock?

    I think they must.

    Here I stand; unveiling myself.
    Laying down my bones.

    Piha, dressed in Kupe’s
    magnificent cloak,
    welcoming me home.

“Oh, it’s you. My old friend.
    Back for another intimate
    conversation.

You know you are safe with me.”

And the wildness of this place,
unleashes the longing in my soul.
    To speak my truth.

    For I am known here.

    And that’s all
    I can ever hope for.

And that is more than enough.

Thank you for your poems. I know Piha well. My grandparents had a cottage there and I spent many happy childhood hours playing and roaming with my brothers. I know exactly where you parked your car at the top of the hill. I do also every time I go back. There is that magical surge as you look down on the distant sand and waves before you move forward and coast down the hill again. One of my favourite spots is on the Tasman lookout above the Southern end of the beach looking down on the infinite patterns of the sea foam.

I have a poem for you—

    THE SEAGULL

A seagull wheels and dives along the shore,

Adjusts its wings in calm and measured flight.

Brief skiffs of rain paint shadows on the lake,

A boy holds firm his wild and frenzied kite.

I long to leave this place; soar with the gull,

But something pulls me down and won’t let go.

A distant voice that speaks in ancient tongue,

Not yet not yet: there’s more you need to know.

I turn my face toward the coming storm,

Make still my heart and count in measured beat,

And comb my trembling fingers through my hair,

Refuse to let my mind admit defeat.

Thank you, David. There is something really heart warming to have my own poems suddenly appear before me. I have written a number of poems since that original anthology and have not done anything with them. Some I have published here I guess. I am still debating whether I have enough to publish again. I am working on a project for Te Wahi Ora Women’s Retreat … writing the story (briefly) behind some of my poems and what I have learned about myself and life since then. The aim to give something to women to reflect upon when they are on Retreat at Te Wahi Ora in Piha. Are you interested in reading what I have written?

Here is the one for Man and Wife.
If this works, I will post another … but if you would like to give me your email address I will send the rest that way, if you like. I couldn’t find your details via your Avatar. Didn’t try very hard though. 🙂
