Word extension and final consonants

    These  are often wrongly written.

    When one-syllable word ends in a single vowel and single consonant double the consonant eg big =bigger or fat = fatter

    Hot  = hotter

    Words of more than one syllable….

    If the word ends with a single vowel with accent on final syllable it take a double. Eg dispel = dispelling, concur = concurred

    If the word ends with a single vowel with the accent on the first or second syllable it stays single. Eg: benefit =benefited, fidget =fidgeting, happen = happened.
