Keep a journal or a diary. I read somewhere that the word ‘journalism’ is taken from the French word journal, which in turn comes from the Latin diurnal or daily. Many successful journalists wrote diaries when they were young because they had an innate desire to record events and to practise their writing skills. It doesn’t matter what you write about when you’re starting out, practise is everything!  Keep a journal about anything at all. It will help you get into a habit of writing everyday.
