Here’s a question about getting paid work a PAE student asked.
NZIBS encourages graduates to seek proofreader work from foreign (as in outside NZ) places.
Yes, we do. Someone wise once told me to “Fish where the fish are”.
Someone asked Willie Sutton why he robbed banks. His answer was equally simple: “Because that’s where the money is”.
.
Work for NZIBS proofreader graduates falls into two types.
LOCAL WORK, as with: real estate listings, auction house catalogues, tertiary students’ assignments or theses, manufacturers creating products which require instruction/assembly manuals, club newsletters, land developer plans and submissions to council, magazines, sales letters and brochures, CEO powerpoint slides, museum handouts etc.
.
There are 80 members of PANZ, Book Publishers Assn NZ. (*See the list below.)
They publish around 2000 titles per year, combined total. Most produce 6-12 titles pa. A few do 20-30 pa.
Some PANZ members have in-house, employee proofreaders, but most rely on external, freelance proofreaders, each with specialised knowledge of their topic, eg: horses, sailing, cooking etc.
.
FOREIGN SOURCED WORK, all of the above, but especially book publishers.
It is easier to get yourself on each UK book publisher’s register of available trained professional proofreaders if you can list 6-12 topics where you have specialised background knowledge.
Each topic on your list becomes a ‘keyword’ and is linked to your name on their register.
Keywords can be single words (archery), double (Italian cooking), triple (antique furniture restoration) etc.
.
PAE Tutorials 11 and 12 focus on how graduates go about getting paid work.
In essence, you should have have business cards, flyers, posters you can give out or put where prospective clients can see them – and discover YOU.
Report #1020 outlines the steps involved in how to find the right match between YOU (with your specialised topics) and a suitable NZ or UK book publisher, using your local library.
This process takes time but is a good investment in your future.
We recommend graduates stick with UK publishers as their version of English is very close to NZ English.
.
According to the International Publishers Association, UK book publishers released 184,000 new and revised titles in 2013. So there is plenty of proofreading work to be done.
I understand there are one million new books published in English every year. That will include India, USA, Canada, Australia etc.
BTW, UK book publishers love Kiwi proofreaders because we work ‘overnight’ (our daytime) and publishing is a 24/7 industry.
.
We steer clear of the American publishers because have quite a different strain of the English language.
.
I’ll sidestep your query about where you pay tax on your foreign earnings. It’s outside my field. Ask your accountant to advise you.
NB: There is always an accountant on ‘pro bono service’ at every Citizens Advice Bureau around NZ. Ask what day/night the accountant is on duty.
But in essence, we must all pay our taxes. Unless your name is Apple or Google.
.
Cheers, Brian Morris

Although you’ve said much of this before in both the report that you referred to, and in some of the earlier tutorials as well as 11 and 12 that you mention here, it is both comforting and motivational to read it again.
You will surely be missed when you leave.
Kind regards,
Kathy Swailes

Thank you, Kathy. I’m retiring with the knowledge Dr Liza will grow into the Principal role and add her own wisdom. Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to doing different things in my retirement. So is Carol. Twentysix years is a long time.
